Pumping a septic tank in Alabama requires a Pumper licence from the Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board. The board licenses several trades separately — Basic and Advanced Installers, Manufacturers, Portable Toilet operators and Pumpers — so a company can be licensed by the board without being licensed to pump your tank.
The licence belongs to a person, not a company
The board licenses individual people. A business appears on the roster through the licensees who work there, so a firm with three licensed pumpers holds three licence numbers, and a firm whose only licensee leaves may hold none. Ask which licensed pumper will be on the truck and check that person.
Counties of operation are a declaration, not a boundary
Each licensee records counties of operation with the board. That is what places a company on a county page here, and it is a stronger signal than the mailing address most states publish — but it is still something the licensee declares, not a guarantee. Of the 408 companies in this directory, 16 declare all 67 Alabama counties. A statewide declaration does not mean a truck will drive four hours to your property.
Verification steps
- Ask for the business name, the licensed pumper's name, and the AOWB licence number.
- Open the official AOWB roster search.
- Tick Pumpers. Leave the inactive option off unless you are deliberately checking a lapsed licence.
- Search the licensee's last name, or filter by county, and open the record.
- Confirm the Pumper # shows Active, and that the business name and phone match what you were told.
Watch out for shared business names
Generic names repeat across unrelated Alabama firms — three separate companies trade as “AAA Septic Tank Service” in Covington, Colbert and Cullman, each with its own address, phone and licence. Match the phone and licence number, not just the name. This directory keys its cards on name and phone together for the same reason.
