How to verify a North Dakota sanitary pumper

North Dakota permits the company that pumps and hauls septage. The catch is the age of the published list.

The permit that allows pumping

North Dakota requires a DEQ sanitary pumper permit to service septic systems, holding tanks, portable restrooms and similar devices that receive domestic wastewater. Class I and Class II are both septic system servicers under NDAC 33.1-21-02. Class I is three or more servicing vehicles or at least one portable-toilet truck; Class II is everyone else. Both may pump a household tank. If the company that arrives is not on that list, that is a reason to stop the job.

DEQ publishes the register as a PDF of pumpers licensed on or before July 23, 2026. Permits expire on 31 December each year. Businesses close, change hands and let permits lapse, so a name on these pages is a starting point, not proof the permit is still current. Ask for the number and check DEQ's current file.

Verification steps

  1. Ask for the business name and its DEQ sanitary pumper permit number (NDSP…).
  2. Open the DEQ septic pumper program page and download the current Annual Active ND Sanitary Pumper List.
  3. Confirm the company is still on the list and the permit has not expired.
  4. Confirm the business pumps household tanks at your address, then get a written quote.

Reading the county

DEQ publishes the business county itself. It is not a service area — a sanitary pumper permit is a North Dakota permit, so a business in the next county may well cover your address.
