How to verify a Minnesota SSTS maintainer licence

Minnesota publishes a licence number, status and expiry date for every septic business. This is the easiest state on the site to check properly.

Maintainer is the licence that pumps

Every Minnesota business that designs, installs, repairs, maintains, operates or inspects a subsurface sewage treatment system must be licensed by the MPCA. One licence can carry several designations, and the one you need is Maintainer — MPCA tells homeowners they must employ a state-licensed maintenance business to pump out solids from a septic tank.

Installer, Designer, Inspector and Service Provider are separate designations. A business can be a licensed installer and not a maintainer, which means it can build your system but is not the business to call to empty it. 158 of the 311 businesses in this directory hold both.

Verification steps

  1. Ask for the business name and its MPCA licence number (they look like L4141).
  2. Open the MPCA SSTS licensed business search.
  3. Search the licence number or business name — or pick your county from the dropdown and tick Maintainer to see everyone near you.
  4. Confirm the licence status reads Current and that the Maintainer expiry date has not passed.
  5. Check the licensee name matches the person you have been dealing with.

What Minnesota publishes that most states do not

MPCA gives a licence number, the licensee's name, the business address, phone, the licence status and a separate expiry date for each designation. That is more than any other state in this directory publishes, which is why the Minnesota cards carry a licence number and a real expiry rather than a retrieval date.
