Ask about island access before comparing prices

Say whether the property is on San Juan, Orcas, Lopez, Shaw or another island. Ask whether the provider already has equipment there, whether ferry or barge arrangements are needed, and how travel, extra hose, digging and disposal affect the total price. Do not assume a county listing guarantees emergency availability or service to a ferry-unserved island.

For a sewer-district property with an individual tank, ask the district who handles pumping before hiring privately. A tank does not always mean a standalone septic system. For an onsite system, pumping and a required monitoring inspection may be separate services; check the county septic program for your system's requirements.

Why focus on the San Juan islands?

The county's 2011 science synthesis estimated about 75% of residents relied on onsite septic systems. This is historical population evidence, not a current household percentage. Its 2022 capital-facilities plan describes individual sewage disposal outside the listed community sewer areas. We prioritize those rural properties without claiming all island homes are on septic.

Selection and source limits

The July 2026 pumper section has nine entries. Seven have local island locations; Rainbow Enterprises and Dirty Deeds Septic are listed in Anacortes and omitted from this locally based shortlist, not deemed unlicensed. Inspector-only entries are excluded. We use the replacement document currently linked from the county program, not the older August 2025 or unavailable May 2026 versions. Source phones were visually checked, not connection-tested. Inclusion is not an endorsement.
